John is trying to describe the indescribable.
A city shining with the glory of God.
Massive walls.
Enormous gates.
Gold so pure it looks like glass.
Pearls so large that entire gates are made from them.
It is a city so enormous that its dimensions are almost impossible to comprehend.
At some point, you almost want to say, “Come on, John. Seriously?”
But maybe that's exactly the point.
Because shouldn't Heaven blow us away?
Shouldn't eternity with an infinite God be beyond anything our finite minds can completely understand?
John is doing his best to describe things he’s never seen before using things he has.
And one detail stands out.
The things we consider priceless here are ordinary construction materials there.
We spend our lives chasing things Heaven uses for pavement.
Maybe that should change what impresses us now instead of later.

Today’s Question: Have I become too impressed with temporary things?
Today’s Challenge: Notice something today you normally place a lot of value on and remind yourself: “This isn’t what I’m living for.”
Today’s Prayer: “Jesus, keep my heart from becoming attached to things that won't last. Help me live with eternity in mind and look forward to everything You have prepared.”
