The people weren't saying no to God.
They were saying, "Not yet."
And that's what makes this passage so uncomfortable.
Because most of us aren't openly rebelling against God.
We're postponing obedience.
"I'll get serious about my faith later."
"I'll deal with that habit later."
"I'll get baptized later."
"I'll start serving later."
The problem is that "later" has a way of becoming never.
Days become months.
Months become years.
And eventually, we get comfortable with a version of Christianity that costs us very little.
